Some people call Miami the Magic City, but Laura Ives is beginning to have her doubts. When she accepted the copy writing job here, the world seemed full of promise. But her dream job ended abruptly with a pink slip in her mailbox, and she has been struggling to succeed as a free-lancer ever since. Her love life, too, is lackluster. It seems the only magic left in Miami is at the movies, so when an oldies festival comes to town, Laura is first in line. There, a chance encounter with a handsome, pipe-smoking stranger changes her life.

Her first meeting with Douglas Randall hardly seems like kismet; his outspoken views on the evils of advertising leave her fuming. But something about him must be magic, for the very next day she is offered an assignment at Miami’s biggest ad agency. The mermaid concept Laura creates for Star Shoes is an instant hit, and that makes her very happy. But it’s her blossoming romance with Douglas that makes her believe in fairy tales again….
